Meet Karen

Hello there – I’m Karen, or Kaz to my friends. It’s a pleasure to meet you.

When I was a child, my gran bestowed upon me the old-fashioned arts of knitting, cross stitch, and how to cook a good apricot tart. I can’t say I was a natural (the skill of casting on eludes me to this day) but I cherished every moment.

Upon reaching high school I figured it was time to do something ‘serious’ with my life. I said goodbye to my beloved studies in Art and Home Economics and hello to Science and Maths. After all, arts degrees aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on – or so I was told. And who grows up aspiring to be a housewife in this day and age?

I’m now hurtling towards my mid-30’s at an alarming rate. I work Monday to Friday in an office. It’s a reasonably pleasant job with a reasonably pleasant income. I live with my partner who despite my subtle as a sledgehammer hints seems quite happy to cohabit joyously in sin.  We have two very spoilt four-legged fur kids.

Life is really rather good.

But something is missing…..

Friends have often said I’d have made a great 1950’s housewife – and I’m starting to think they may just be on to something.

  • I love to bake
  • I treasure my beautiful hand-me-down vintage sewing machine. (Between you and me, the only thing I’ve sewn so far resembles an environmentally friendly shopping bag from Coles – but by gosh if I’m not making things – and that’s what counts!)
  • I get a real sense of achievement when I reorganize my pantry
  • I knit scarves and dream of one day learning to Crochet
  • I get super excited about trips to Spotlight – super dooper excited

I’m no domestic goddess. I’m blessed with overwhelming enthusiasm more so than actual talent.  But these days I’m getting my ‘housewife’ on whenever I get the chance and loving it! Much to the amusement of my friends.

Unfortunately the bank manager says my mortgage won’t support a real housewife lifestyle – so I’ll have to make do with a bit of domestic dabbling here and there instead.

So please join me as I explore what it means to be a modern-day wannabe housewife. There’ll be craft, cooking and other reasonably interesting bits n pieces that I just have to share with you!

Want to say hello?

Fun! We’re on the same page, for sure. I like to bake, crochet, and do crafty things. But I’m learning (read: don’t know how) to cook, knit, and sew. Well, I’ve made simple curtains. And it was the best day ever.

    Thanks for following my blog!

Thank you! Wow – sewing curtains sounds like quite an achievement I love the idea of sewing but am yet to really get into it. I live in hope! 🙂

Hi Karen, nice to meet you when you “liked” my Sheltie’s photo post! We’ve got a few things in common — I learned to crochet from my grandma and made several afghans while I was in college. Haven’t had time lately, though, for that sort of thing! I see you have TWO darling Shelties — lucky you! Aren’t they the sweetest, most clever, creatures?!

Hi Debbie, I love that we have things in common. And yes – Shelties are the best! (not that we’re biased or anything 😉
